For the past month or so, I have been working as a cook at sea. I can’t say much about it yet, as I am still in the fiery throes of the whole experience. It is so many things.
We sailed through the Bay of Biscay, where I threw up repeatedly for an entire day while I got used to living under the sea. I saw a giant beautiful Sei whale about twenty feet from the boat which pretty much rocked my entire world. I screamed and cried and did all the other things you do when you see magic in real life.
A few days ago, the bow went under water and a wave crashed into the galley. We sailed through the Strait of Gibraltar and I woke up to see what we think was the rock. On the other side was a giant white neon sign in Arabic over some misty mountains.
Hopefully the pictures do a better job of explaining something I can’t seem to wrap my head around yet. They are all cooking related. At this point, I will be living in Spain for a bit and cooking in an actual kitchen apartment and shopping for incredible produce and pastries every day.
